How to Redesign Your Website Without Losing Your Google Rankings

Your site ranks for "your service + city" . great. A pretty redesign can wipe that out overnight if you change URLs or delete content. Here's how we migrate safely.

Step 1 . Inventory everything

List every indexed URL in Google Search Console. Note traffic, title tags, and backlinks. Never redesign without this map.

Step 2 . Keep URLs where possible

Same file names (services.html stays services.html). If a URL must change, add a 301 redirect permanently. On Netlify, redirects live in _redirects or netlify.toml . don't rely on 404 eyeballing.

Step 3 . Keep titles & headings stable

Page title "Web Design Cape Town | Brand" should stay similar on the new page. Keep H1 meaning, keep body copy themes. Change design, not meaning.

Step 4 . Ship staging, then swap

Deploy to staging (defynd-tech.netlify.app), check mobile, test WhatsApp links, then swap DNS/production in one window. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console immediately.

Biggest killer: renaming services.html to service.html without a redirect. Google finds the old URL, gets 404, and removes you.
